Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia X is returning to Melbourne Airport, with flights between Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne commencing from November.

The service will initially operate three times a week and marks the resumption of AirAsia X flights out of Melbourne after a near four-year hiatus.

The airline shifted its Victorian operation to Avalon Airport in 2018 before suspending flights when Australia’s border closed in March 2020.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos said the return of AirAsia X to Melbourne Airport underscores the strength of market demand as well as the airport’s convenience and competitiveness.

“AirAsia X flew out of Melbourne Airport for a decade, and we know our customers will be thrilled to have them back here,” he said.

“The last international border restrictions were lifted in February, and we have been really pleased with how international travel is ramping up.

“With a significant network beyond Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X provides a one-stop service into much of India and South-East Asia, which is particularly valuable for international students or Victorians looking to visit friends and family overseas.

“AirAsia X’s decision to return to Melbourne Airport highlights the value travellers and airlines place on convenience as well as price.

“Melbourne Airport is the destination of choice for budget airlines: we’re already the home of Australia’s largest low-cost carrier Jetstar and we’re the only capital city airport to feature on the launch network of new budget carrier Bonza.

“With parking available at Melbourne Airport from as little as $12 a day, cost-conscious Melburnians don’t need to travel far to find a bargain.”

One-way economy fares to Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia X start from $359 from Melbourne and from $1,999 from Melbourne on a Premium Flatbed.
