Mexican beach town’s tourism getting impacted by seaweed

Owing to the anger of nature, some of the beaches in Mexico are experiencing smelly sargassum seaweed. Sargassum is a mix of algae that discharges hydrogen sulphide gas. To nature, it’s hazardous as well as for the workers who are working together to clean up the Caribbean coastline. The workers in 2022 are experiencing mountains of sargassum.

Sargassum is hateful in nature. They stink like rotting eggs and emanate sulphur. In beach towns, like Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Xcalak, these are common as these towns used to serve as a gateway to paradise.

Scientists now consider that this might be the reason of respiratory problems for the workers associated with the cleaning process and removing the seaweeds under the sweltering heat. As per the media reports, the amount has exceeded the worst track record since 2018.

An article published in the Journal of Travel Medicine, 2019, had talked about the ill impacts of seaweed. According to a media report, the article said that more chronic exposure to these gasses can cause conjunctival and neurocognitive symptoms like memory loss and impaired balance, along with non-specific symptoms like headache, nausea and fatigue.

Even though sargassum does not create any problem to the tourists, health wise, it has an irreparable impact on workers. To the coast, thousands of people have migrated in recent years, however, now they are all set to leave due to alarming health issues.
