The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde-led Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is considering developing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as a top-notch sustainable tourism hub.

Of late, MMRDA has also floated a tender for expression of interest from proficient agencies for coming up a vision document for this purpose.

S V R Srinivas, MMRDA commissioner said that the MMR has played an important role in the economic development of Maharashtra. It supports 4 per cent of India’s GDP, along with 36 per cent of the national corporate tax collection and 25 per cent of the industrial production.

India’s economy is thought to reach USD 5 trillion by 2026. MMR wishes to be a USD 0.25 trillion economy by that time. Tourism is one of the speediest growing divisions with a robust multiplier influence on the economy. Being labor intensive, it holds a huge possibility to generate new jobs.

Mr. Srinivas said that the forests, dams, rivers and water bodies and forts among others present a great prospective. Hence, MMRDA foresees improving the region as a global tourist destination by advancing new tourism places along with refining and reinforcing the current ones.
