Mongolia Launches Integrated Tourism Strategy with Road Projects and Eco-Friendly Policies to Support Regional Economic Growth

Mongolia is setting its sights on a major tourism breakthrough, aiming to attract one million travelers and achieve USD 1 billion in tourism revenue in the coming year. The initiative reflects the country’s growing ambition to transform its travel sector into a key driver of economic growth while strengthening regional development and sustainable infrastructure.

The government has outlined a comprehensive plan to ensure coordinated efforts across all provinces. A crucial meeting of provincial governors, city administrators, and local officials is scheduled for January 15, 2026, where a unified action plan and performance agreement will be finalized. Earlier, a nationwide online briefing brought together more than 300 leaders from districts and local communities across all 21 provinces and the capital, highlighting the scale and seriousness of the initiative.

At the core of Mongolia’s strategy is the creation of a “golden triangle” for tourism, spanning the northern provinces of Khuvsgul, Arkhangai, Selenge, and Bulgan. In Khuvsgul province, major road projects are underway and planned, including the continuation of the Khankh-direction road, the launch of the Shine–Ider route, and the construction of the Khankh–Khatgal road from the eastern side. These projects are expected to improve accessibility to remote areas, making the region more attractive to visitors and enabling local communities to benefit from increased economic activity.

Sustainability is also a central focus. Tourism development is being pursued alongside environmentally friendly policies designed to preserve Mongolia’s natural landscapes, rivers, and forests.
