The sunseekers in United Kingdom will bake in the first of five monster heatwaves set to make this summer Britain’s hottest ever. The Met Office said temperatures in London could blast to a “hazy” 23 degree C by today afternoon, with things getting hotter than parts of Turkey and Mexico over the next five days.

In the next fortnight, the United Kingdom is set to boil under 30 degree C heat when blazing sunshine will be driven by a plume of hot air sweeping from Italy and France.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said that the overall summer forecast is now pointing towards at least four or five major heatwaves.

These will build throughout the summer months, but at the moment, August looks the most likely to bring these blasts of very hot weather. The first major spell of summer could arrive as soon as late May.

A sizzling weekend saw millions of people pack beaches, parks and beer gardens, with the south coast yesterday at a balmy 22C.

The Met Office’s three-month outlook put the probability of hot weather this summer approaching double that of normal years.

It said there was a “40% chance” the summer “will be significantly hotter than average”, with only a 10% probability of a cooler than normal season.

The record for the UK’s hottest day is 38.7C set in Cambridge recorded in July 2019. The Meteorologist Alex Deakin said high pressure driven by the jet stream “arching” north of the UK will boost the hot spell towards the end of the week.

British Weather Services’ meteorologist Jim Dale said next weekend will be perfect for firing barbecues. He added: “We have two good weekends on the way, but it is next weekend when it starts to really feel warm.” Bookies are already predicting this year will experience the fiercest height on record in Britain.

Ladbrokes has slashed odds from 7/4 to just 10/11 on the “hottest summer ever being recorded this year”. It offered 4/1 on the 38.7C record tumbling and 6/1 on a record-setting heatwave sparking a hosepipe ban.

Coral is giving odds of 4/5 for heat records being broken, and offering evens for this summer to be the UK’s hottest on record. The forecasters have also warned that extreme heat could prompt “lively” lightning and hailstorms.
