The coming month of May might bring the chaotic situation back in most of the airports. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced passenger data for May 2022, This shows that the recovery in air travel acceleration is heading towards a busy Northern Hemisphere summer travel season.

Total traffic in May 2022 is expected to be 83.1% compared to May 2021 (measured in revenue passenger kilometres). This is a result of international travel. Global statistics show a 68.7% increase in travel.

Domestic traffic for May 2022 has been up by 0.2% when compared to last year’s data. Significant improvements in many markets were evident. However, a 73.2% year-on-year decline in the Chinese domestic market due to COVID-19-related restrictions has disrupted the entire growth. May 2022 domestic traffic was 76.7% of May 2019.

International traffic has risen to 325.8% than in May 2021. As the travel restrictions are been relaxed from May 2022 the international RPKs reached 64.1% of May 2019 levels.

Willie Walsh, director of IATA stated that the travel recovery continues to gather momentum. People need to travel. And when governments remove COVID-19 restrictions, they do. He also stated that many major international route areas – including within Europe, and the Middle East-North America routes – are already exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels. Since Australia removed all the restrictions on travel it is likely to contribute all over the global travel management. Surprisingly Chinese travel has dropped to 73.2% which indicates there are certain preconditions still existing to make the entire travel industry back in a normal state.

Asia-Pacific airlines have raised to 453.3% in May this year compared to last year’s data. This is significantly higher than the 295.3% year-on-year gain registered in April 2022. The capacity of travel rose to 118.8% and the load factor was up 43.6 percentage points to 72.1%. Improvements in the region are being driven by reduced restrictions in most of the region’s markets, except China.

European carriers’ have seen a traffic rise of 412.3% compared to last year’s data. Capacity rose 221.3%, and load factor climbed 30.1 percentage points to 80.6%.

317.2% increased traffic will be seen in Middle Eastern airlines in 2021. May capacity rose 115.7% versus the year-ago period, and load factor climbed 37.1 percentage points to 76.8%. The progressive re-opening of Asian markets is a possible indication of the market to return.
