More than 42,000 tourists visited Sri Lanka in the month of October, bringing the total count of tourist arrivals to more than 568,000 this year in Sri Lanka so far, as per statistics available from Sri Lanka’s tourism authority.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority said that the South Asian country relies on tourism as one of its highest foreign exchange earners. It hopes to entice at least 1 million tourists by the end of this year.

If Sri Lanka is able to attain this number, the country’s government hopes to achieve revenue of 1.8 billion U.S. dollars from the tourism segment.

Sri Lankan Tourism Minister Harin Fernando has initiated a program for luring football fans who are willing to travel to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup late this month, by upholding Colombo as a transit point.
