The US northeast is being lashed by heavy rain, causing a flurry of flight delays and cancellations during a busy travel weekend ahead of Labour Day and back-to-school season.

According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, as of 12:15 a.m. ET Friday, 6,133 flights within, into or out of the United States had been delayed and 742 cancelled.

“We are experiencing some delays for flights to and from the Northeast tonight due to weather in the region,” Southwest spokesperson Dan Landson said in a media statement Thursday. “We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to get them to their destinations as safely and quickly as possible.”

Southwest had the most disruption, with 124 flights cancelled and 775 delayed.
The National Weather Service posted the following advisory on its website:

“Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain possible from the Northeast to the central Great Plains late Thursday into early Friday. Heavy rain threat expected to settle farther to the south into the southern Mid-Atlantic region on Friday.

“Meanwhile, strong to severe storms w/ damaging winds and heavy rain likely in North Carolina and southern Virginia.”

Charlotte, Newark and LaGuardia are experiencing the most flight delays into and out of those airports: 604 delays flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, 531 at Newark Liberty International Airport and 402 at LaGuardia Airport.

Travellers should monitor flight status throughout the day.
