During this summer, more tourists visited Ooty, known as the ‘Queen of Hills’, compared to the years before.
D Balashankar, the deputy director of horticulture, in the Nilgiris said that from April this year, 8.61 lakh
travelers came to the hills till May. This figure is more than 1 lakh compared to 2022, when Ooty witnessed a tourist influx of 7.34 lakh in the course of April and May.
Even when the summer festival ended, travelers continued to visit the hills, especially during the
weekends with big crowds. The summer festival started on May 6 with a vegetable display in Kotagiri. A listing of events came thereafter with a spice show, fruit show, rose show and 125th flower show till May 23.
In 2023, 3.33 lakh travelers came in April and 3.97 lakh in May compared to 2.21 lakh in April and 4.10
lakh in May in 2022. The flower show for five days alone saw 1.30 lakh travelers to the government
botanical garden (GBG), while making revenue of Rs. 1.23 crore to the horticulture division. Cottage
possessors, hoteliers and those reliant on tourism are overjoyed with their thriving business, particularly after the pandemic. Nevertheless, they are considering improved roads and arrangement for the hill station to prosper.
