Moscow gets suspended from World Tourism Organisation

 Thursday, April 28, 2022

The Russia-Ukraine war entered day 63 with evident damage and destruction across Ukraine.

UN chief Antonio Guterres and Russia FM Sergey Lavrov met in Moscow to discuss ways to find a peaceful resolution to the war.

Lavrov meanwhile said that Moscow is ready to cooperate with the UN to help the civilians safely evacuate the war zone. On the other hand, Russia has continued shelling in Donbass.

The World Tourism Organisation has suspended Russia after member countries voted in the first extraordinary UNWTO General Assembly on April 27.

The Russian delegation declined to step up and defend its position, and instead announced its withdrawal from UNWTO before the debate took place, the WTO said in a statement.

The Assembly voted in favor of suspension, far exceeding the two-third majority required.

The decision is effective immediately, while voluntary withdrawal is only effective one year after a Member submits an official communication through the appropriate channels, WTO said further.
