Mozambique Tourism Sees Significant Revenue Growth During Festive Season, Here’s All You Need to Know

Published on January 7, 2026

Mozambique’s tourist industry performed astonishingly during the festive season, raising €22.7 million (1.7 billion meticais), which was from the 311,740 tourists who visited the country from December 15 to the end of the year. This amount shows a 2.3% positive variation from the anticipated numbers, which is a considerable resurgence in the country’s tourist industry.

According to a preliminary report from the Ministry of the Economy, the festival season was characterized by strong demand for tourism services or events, with a substantial rise in the occupancy rates of the coastal destinations. The tourism representatives in the country were satisfied with the results since the sector managed to generate considerable income, which had a positive impact on the economy of the country.

Joel Nhassengo, National Director for Trade and Service at the Ministry of Economy, has confirmed the success registered by the tourism sector, with its success attributable to local as well as international visitors. He also revealed that price stability as well as continued service delivery had been achieved by the government during this peak period, when there was an increase in movements and economic activity.

During the festive period, Mozambique hosted 199 events nationwide to celebrate the New Year, with approximately 160,218 people attending these activities. These events were primarily centered around the country’s vibrant coastal regions, where visitors flocked to sun-and-beach resorts, contributing to high occupancy rates at hotels and resorts.

Coastal destinations, which remain the most popular among tourists, saw occupancy rates ranging from 33% to 100%, indicating that there was a high demand for Mozambique’s renowned beaches and resorts. Tourism establishments in cities, however, did not experience the same surge, with demand lower than in coastal areas, reflecting a preference for nature, safari, and beach-related tourism during this period.

The festive events played a vital role in attracting tourists, showcasing Mozambique’s cultural, nature, and wildlife attractions, alongside its famous beaches. This period also marked the successful recovery of the tourism sector, reversing the impact seen in previous years due to post-election protests and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mozambique’s economy, especially its tourism sector, was significantly impacted by these crises, and the positive performance in 2025 is a promising sign of continued growth.

Challenges and Security Measures During the Busy Season

Despite the positive tourism results, the government and tourism authorities also had to address several logistical challenges during the festive period. The increase in population mobility, both within the country and across borders, led to a rise in road traffic and some pressure on local services. However, the government was able to ensure the smooth functioning of the economy and public services through coordinated responses.

Security forces played a key role in maintaining order during this high-traffic period. The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), which represents the private sector, particularly the tourism and trade industries, praised the security efforts that ensured the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout the country.

Tourism stakeholders expressed satisfaction with the performance of the sector, highlighting that the positive results were driven by strong demand for sun-and-beach resorts, safaris, and cultural tourism. The CTA noted that Mozambique’s tourism infrastructure continues to attract visitors looking for unique and memorable experiences in nature, while at the same time providing a welcoming and stable environment for those seeking cultural engagement and adventure.

Tourism’s Role in Economic Recovery and Growth

The increase in tourism revenue during the festive period has had a significant impact on Mozambique’s economy. The hospitality industry, which heavily depends on foreign visitors, has been instrumental in providing employment and generating foreign exchange earnings. The growth in tourism revenue during 2025 is a sign of recovery for the sector, which has been working hard to regain the momentum lost in previous years.

With more tourists flocking to the coastal regions and other attractions, local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, transport services, and tour operators, have benefitted from increased sales and bookings. The revenue generated during this period is expected to have a long-term positive effect on the local economy, especially in regions heavily dependent on tourism for economic sustenance.

Addressing Hygiene and Safety Concerns

While the tourism sector saw impressive growth, Mozambique’s National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) took action to ensure that businesses adhered to hygiene, safety, and cleanliness standards. In total, 93 establishments, including restaurants and beverage outlets, were suspended for failing to meet these standards. The government responded swiftly to these violations by carrying out inspections and ensuring that safety and hygiene measures were in place.

The INAE also reported the destruction of over 54,900 units of expired or improperly stored products, highlighting the ongoing effort to improve public health and safety within the tourism industry. To further ensure the safety of visitors, the INAE received 312 complaints during the period, which were promptly addressed. The authority also conducted awareness-raising activities with over 2,000 establishments to educate businesses on proper safety and hygiene protocols.

The focus on hygiene and safety standards reflects the broader commitment to maintaining high-quality service in Mozambique’s tourism sector, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a safe, clean, and pleasant experience while exploring the country’s rich cultural and natural offerings.

Moving Forward: A Focus on Sustainable Tourism

Looking ahead, tourism officials are optimistic about the continued growth of the sector, especially as Mozambique seeks to position itself as a sustainable tourism destination. With a rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife, Mozambique is well-placed to attract more international visitors in the coming years.

The government’s emphasis on promoting responsible tourism, combined with efforts to preserve the country’s natural resources, will be key in sustaining growth and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are felt by local communities. Mozambique’s continued focus on enhancing the visitor experience, improving infrastructure, and maintaining safety standards will play a crucial role in solidifying the country’s reputation as a top destination for both regional and international tourists.

A Bright Future for Mozambique Tourism

Mozambique’s tourism industry has shown remarkable strength and progress during the holiday season, as it has contributed immensely to the country’s economy. The success of the holiday season also shows that the tourism industry of Mozambique has the potential to develop and flourish in the years to come because the necessary efforts and strategies are being made to exploit the potential of the tourism industry of Mozambique and to make Mozambique an attractive tourist destination for all the other nations around the globe.
