Dr. S Ibomcha, Vice-President of Manipur People’s Party (MPCC) has requested the government to set up Lamphelpat as a spot of urban tourism.

In a recent statement, Dr. Ibomcha explained that making Lamphelpat as an urban tourist spot will not only attract new life to the city of Imphal and its adjoining areas but it will assist in developing the economy of the locals living in and around the water body.

Uripok assembly constituency is located in the heart of Imphal. However, during rainy season, the area perennially encounters flood due to construction of different structures in Lamphelpat, thereby damaging the natural ecosystem and drainage.

The 100-acre land area was reserved for building up a water body in Lamphelpat during the Congress rule, but the project did not materialised.

Also, the BJP rule made announcement of similar type but no efforts have been taken till now.

He said that the 100-acre area is too small to create a water body as urban tourism spot, urging the government to retrieve the water body’s original geographical areas by leaving only RIMS and Central Agricultural University.
