downloadThe Music Tourism Convention will be held in Cologne on August 29, 2018. This international specialist event, which was previously in Liverpool and Franklin, Tennessee, focuses on local music scenes and their influence on tourism. For this reason, the convention has been scheduled to coincide with the c/o pop Festival, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. The two events, including the associated c/o pop Convention, will make Cologne a focus of attention for the music sector for almost a week in the late summer of this year.

According to the Music Tourism Convention’s organizer, Sound Diplomacy, this event is the world’s biggest conference that brings together the music and tourism sectors. It investigates the extent to which the tourist services of a destination can be influenced, supported and strengthened by the local music culture. They take into account not only festivals but also a destination’s music-cultural heritage, music routes and possible cross-sector partnerships.

“We are proud that through our united efforts we were able to bring the Music Tourism Convention to Cologne,” says Josef Sommer, CEO of the Cologne Tourist Board. “Following the event locations Liverpool and Tennessee, Cologne has now impressed the organizers as a music-oriented city and a travel destination.”

At the Music Tourism Convention, the Cologne Tourist Board and Tourismus NRW will work within the framework of the #urbanana project to attract new visitor groups by publicizing Cologne’s vibrant music scene and North Rhine-Westphalia’s heritage of popular culture. Together with their project partners, Düsseldorf Tourismus and Ruhr Tourismus, they will provide insights into local live music traditions and discuss new potential opportunities for the tourism sector.

“The Music Tourism Convention is a unique opportunity for us to showcase the tourism potential of the music scene in North Rhine-Westphalia on a big stage. We’re delighted to welcome this convention to our federal state under the umbrella of the city tourism project #urbanana,” says Dr. Heike Döll-König, CEO of Tourismus NRW e.V. “The event finds an especially fruitful environment here – physically and culturally close to the Ruhr region as a festival hotspot, as well as the renowned club scene of Cologne and the musical legends of Düsseldorf, such as Kraftwerk.”

In Cologne’s bid to be the convention’s venue, an especially important role was played by cologne on pop GmbH, which is handling communication with the convention’s organizer, Sound Diplomacy, and also serves as the event’s local organizer.

“The decision to hold Germany’s first Music Tourism Convention in Cologne in parallel to the anniversary event of the c/o pop festival is further proof of the significant role that music plays in the public image of the city and its region,” explains Ralph Christoph, Head of the c/o pop Convention.

Other institutions that helped to bring this event to Cologne were the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Pop Culture Department of the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City of Cologne, the Staff Unit for Media and the Internet Sector of the City of Cologne, and CREATIVE.NRW, the network of creative professionals in North Rhine-Westphalia.
