The number of international tourists in the Netherlands overnight accommodations last year decreased by 13 per cent yearly, according to the figures provided by the Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The same shows that last year there was an increase in the number of domestic guests, approaching the pre-pandemic levels, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to the data provided by the CBS, a total of 32 million Dutch and international tourists stayed in overnight accommodations last year, or 17 per cent compared to the previous year, however still 30 per cent fewer compared to 2019 figures.

“In 2021, 6.3 million foreign guests stayed in Dutch tourist accommodations. All accommodation types showed a decrease in overnight visitors last year, with the exception of group accommodations. Year on year, the decline was largest among hotels or 14 per cent decrease,” the statement reads.

According to the CBS report, the number of domestic guests also decreased yearly by 28 per cent to 25.7 million, nearly the same number as before the spread of the Coronavirus.

The number of guests from Germany and the United Kingdom has continued to decrease.

“In 2021, there were again fewer guests from Germany and the United Kingdom at Dutch overnight accommodations. Relative to a year earlier, the number of guests from Germany fell by 24 per cent to 2.5 million,” the report shows.
The number of visitors from the United Kingdom decreased by 65 per cent to 210 thousand.

As for visitors from Germany, compared to 2019 figures, there were 60 per cent fewer visitors from Germany.

The number of guests from Belgium marked a total of 56 per cent decrease compared to 2019 figures.

“Guest rates relating to the other European countries increased by 15 per cent year on year. Relative to 2019, this was still 64 per cent lower. The number of guests from the rest of the world was down by 6 per cent. It was 84 per cent lower than in 2019,” the statement reveals.

However, the report revealed that the number of visitors increased most significantly in the province of Zeeland, or a 30 per cent increase reaching 2.6 million. At the same time, Groningen was the province that marked a decrease in occupancy rates or a 4 per cent decrease.

The spread of the Coronavirus and its new strains caused profound damages to many industries, especially the travel and tourism sector.

A previous report published by the European Travel Council (ETC) showed that travel across the European Union countries was 63 per cent lower in 2021, compared to 2019 figures.
