Laos tour guide Geng Vang recently led a group of Chinese tourists through the cultural and scenic wonders of his hometown, Luang Prabang. Fluent in Mandarin, Geng ensured that the group was well-informed about the historic and cultural landmarks, including the Royal Palace Museum, which was built in 1904 and once served as the residence of the founding king of Laos, Sisavang Vong. He also guided them to the top of Mount Phousi, where they were treated to a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the entire city. The day concluded with a visit to the bustling night market, where the travelers had the chance to purchase local handicrafts, textiles, and street food.
The group was part of the inaugural voyage of the newly launched cross-border tourism train, StarExpress, which connects Kunming, the capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan province, to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. This train, developed by CTG Asset, a subsidiary of China Tourism Group, aims to support the Belt and Road Initiative by promoting cultural and tourism exchanges between the two countries.
The StarExpress takes passengers on a scenic journey that crosses the Tropic of Cancer and passes through the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang before reaching its final destination in Vientiane. The inaugural journey, which took place over three nights and four days, provided travelers with an opportunity to experience the diverse cultures, landscapes, and ethnic customs of both China and Laos.
During their time in Luang Prabang, travelers explored the rich Buddhist culture, while in Vientiane, they enjoyed French colonial architecture, tranquil Buddhist temples, and the city’s relaxed riverside atmosphere. One of the passengers, Liu Yaling, an employee of Beijing Yumei International Travel Agency, remarked that although she had traveled to many countries, this was her first time visiting Laos, thanks to the convenience of the train journey.
Liu had heard about tourism trains but had never experienced one herself. The StarExpress, with its luxury amenities, cross-border experiences, and excellent service, appealed to her. Designed by teams from China and abroad, the train prioritizes environmental protection and safety, featuring advanced soundproofing technology, an integrated intelligent information system, and a smart user interface.
Onboard entertainment includes on-demand movies and interactive games, adding to the travelers’ experience. The butler service, fine dining, and cultural experiences, such as tea ceremonies and ethnic dances, helped make the journey even more enjoyable. Liu noted that the crew put a great deal of care into ensuring that passengers had a relaxing and memorable trip.
