New steps on staycation will improve responsible tourism

Safeguarding Argyll and Bute’s striking landscape and improving visitor attraction is the main target of the measures related to tourism disclosed this week.

In response to anxieties related to the effect of irresponsible behaviour of teh visitors, councillors are keen on additional investment and other new measures. They include:

• Employment of four new wardens. This would help increase awareness of responsible camping and stop littering
• A new Staycation Project Officer to connect with businesses, communities, and partners on several issues related to visitor management;
• Information in all public toilets. Signposting should be there for a waste water disposal facilities map that would stop irresponsible disposal.
• At five locations, eleven temporary toilets will be made.

The council in addition is working many efforts related to responsible tourism together with local organisations. They include:

• To the Friends of Loch Lomond, council is funding £12,500 to provide temporary toilets at Arrochar and Luss;
• For the GRAB Trust, council is financing to conduct anti-litter activities across Argyll and Bute;
• Engagement with providers of the campsites and give confidence in using existing waste disposal facilities for the campervans and motorhomes which visit the place from other regions.
• With Argyll and the Isles Strategic Tourism Partnership, developing a new strategy related to tourism.
• At all the famous visitor spots, council funding additional police patrol systems.
