Jacinda Ardern is very excited to welcome Australians back to New Zealand as borders reopen for quarantine-free travel. New Zealand has reopened its borders to Australian tourists for quarantine-free travel after almost two years of border closures.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reopened the international border to Aussies from 11.59pm April 12, nine months after the trans-Tasman bubble was slammed shut over a COVID-19 outbreak.

More than 3,000 travellers are expected to arrive from Australia on day one of the border reopening, with the first flight from Melbourne touching down in Auckland at 1am on Wednesday. The Australian citizens and returning New Zealand residents must be fully-vaccinated to be eligible for quarantine-free travel.

The travellers will need to undertake either a supervised rapid antigen test, LAMP or a PCR test before departure and will be tested upon arrival and again on day six.

Ms Ardern said she was excited to welcome Australians back to New Zealand ahead of the Easter break and Kiwi ski season.

Qantas and Air New Zealand have added additional flights to keep up with demand with airlines anticipating travel to soar from mid-June for the ski season. The tourism contributed over $40billion to the New Zealand economy before the pandemic sparked prolonged lockdowns and border closures.

The Australians accounted for around 40 per cent of tourism with more than 1.5million visitors travelling to New Zealand each year.

The travellers from visa-waiver countries including the United States of America, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Korea and Singapore, and those with valid visitor visas will be able to enter New Zealand from May 1.
