Recently the Gateshead Council’s planning committee has approved the development plan of £260m arena-led regeneration scheme and this decision will very soon create around 2,000 new jobs in the region, and will give a £60m annual boost to the local economy.
This new scheme is based on the decisions of the NewcastleGateshead waterfront at Gateshead Quays, includes a world class arena, purpose built conference and exhibition centre, restaurants, a dual branded hotel and large areas of outdoor realm and performance space. It is expected that it will attract more than 338,000 additional visitors to the region each year.
The recent plans were submitted by Gateshead Council’s development partner Ask:PATRIZIA, who have appointed Sir Robert McAlpine to build the 54,500sqm scheme, designed by internationally renowned HOK Architects. Site enabling work will start before the end of the year with construction expected to commence in March 2021 and the new complex will open in 2023. An announcement on the hotel operator is expected to be made in the coming weeks.
Venue management company, ASM Global will operate the campus, which includes a 12,500 capacity, 29,000sqm arena and over 7,000sqm of flexible event space. It will host first class entertainment and sports alongside international conferences, meetings and exhibitions as well as festivals and cultural events.
