As the location for an important tourism project, the North East has been selected and aims to draw greater amount of investment, greet more sporting, cultural events, and businesses to support growth, develop new job opportunities, and improve domestic and international tourist numbers.

The independent review of 2021 into DMOs, conducted by Nick de Bois, the chair of British Tourist Authority, found the scenery is congested and fragmented. For instance, in England, there are over150 DMOs of all shapes and sizes, which make it hard for the tourists planning to take a break and businesses keen on investing.

To fix this difficulty, the government is reforming the DMOs by recognizing the best performing organizations so they can increase the visitor economy and draw lucrative businesses, sporting and cultural events. Earlier this year, the plans were set out.

As part of plans to repair the present system, NewcastleGateshead Initiative in the North East has been chosen to head a pilot in joint affiliation with Visit County Durham and Visit Northumberland and working across seven local authority areas.

The Destination Development Partnership will get £2.25m to assistance to set up and market the region as a “must-visit destination” at the same time drawing additional private investment and driving growth.
The main target of the joint affiliation model is to make the tourism season bigger and pull more visitors from across the UK.
