Northern Mariana Islands ranked 3rd fastest growing tourist destination by UNWTO

HonoluluUnited Nations World Tourism Organization or UNWTO World Tourism Barometer noted Northern Mariana Islands was ranked the third fastest growing tourist destination in the world.



The destinations worldwide received 369 million international tourists in the first four months of 2017.



This tourist’s figure in Northern Mariana Islands raises around 21 million more in the same period in 2016, representing a 6 percent increase in worldwide arrivals.



The international arrivals are reported by the destinations around the world were positive overall and varied by region.



In 2016, tourism in the Northern Mariana Islands grew by 37.3 percent with 531,000 visitors in 2016.

The Palestinian territories and Egypt locked down the top two spots in the world above the CNMI at growth rates of 57.8 percent and 51 percent, respectively.



UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai said that as they are celebrating 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the tourism department is welcoming the continued development of tourism and recall the growth with the increased responsibility to ensure tourism by economically, socially and environmentally.




Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Christopher A. Concepcion said the latest ranking is a collective accomplishment for the CNMI.



The Marianas Visitors Authority is extremely pleased to see The Marianas which is ranked the third-fastest growing tourist destination in the world by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.




This tourism industry sets apart from hundreds of competing destinations in the region and from around the world, and they are very honoured to be recognised by such a prestigious organization like the UNWTO.
