As per a recent report presented by Diário de Notícias, the tourism sector at present are in dearth of almost 45,000 workers, mostly in hotels. As a result of which hotels are already making the use of overtime to recompense this shortage. For now, this option is working. However, on long-term basis, it’s not acceptable and this has led the Portuguese Hospitality Association to question the Government in search of that right answer.

AHP has cautioned that in the coming days, more workers would be required, not that because hotels have opted for overtime option and employees are already overburdened due to this. Cristina Siza Vieira, the executive vice president of AHP, says that this is a situation of worker shortage will not last for long, even with increase in wages, because worker shortage continues to be a persistent problem.

These hoteliers are requesting the Executive to decrease the burden of tax and make the hiring process of the foreign workers easy and hassle-free. However, the Government has acted in response through worker mobility contract with countries like Morocco and India.

Last week, the Finance Minister explained that already new agreements are in process with Moldova, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Georgia and the Philippines, for responding to this dearth of working staffs various industries of the country. However, but Cristina Siza Vieira, explains that well-organized response is required to bring immigrants back.
