Officials at Oakland International Airport (OAK) released October traffic reports. Total passengers increased 6%, from 1,076,759 in October 2016 to 1,140,921 this year. The increase was supported by 3.3% more flight operations and 6.6% more seats. Passenger traffic for the last 12 months increased 8.5% over the prior year.
Throughout 2017, OAK has been experiencing its highest passenger volumes since 2007, including 72,269 international passengers in October – a 109% increase over October 2016 – reflecting new flights and destinations by Norwegian, Volaris, LEVEL, Southwest Airlines, and British Airways.
“As we approach the year’s end, it is apparent that Oakland will surpass 13 million passengers served in 2017,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis. “Expanded domestic routes and substantial international growth continue to affirm OAK’s rising presence as a key gateway for air travel to and from the San Francisco Bay Area.”
In 2017, Oakland has seen new international service to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos by Southwest, and London, Copenhagen, and Barcelona by Norwegian. British Airways and LEVEL also began service from OAK this year to London and Barcelona, respectively.
Norwegian has also announced that it will begin service from OAK to Rome and Paris in early 2018.
Domestically, OAK announced this week that American Airlines will begin daily service to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on April 3, 2018. Southwest Airlines announced new service to Orlando (MCO), Minneapolis (MSP), Indianapolis (IND), and San Antonio (SAN), all to begin in summer 2018. Southwest will also resume service to Newark/New York City (EWR) in April 2018, becoming year-round after its initial summer seasonal service this year.
