Odisha government launches direct flights to enhance tourism

Under the “Viability Gap Funding” scheme, with the introduction of direct flights connecting Bhubaneswar to Dubai, Bangkok and Singapore, the government of Odisha is confident that by 2025, they’ll be doubling-up its international tourist arrivals in this eastern state from its pre-pandemic levels, on Monday, a tourism official said about the same.

A Viability Gap Funding is a government financial assistance given to the airlines to link the breach between operation cost and anticipated revenues.


Sachin Jadhav, Director of Tourism Odisha, said that by 2025, the target is to double the international arrivals and reach 2.5 lakh from the pre-Covid figure of 1.2 lakh welcomed in 2019.


The government of Odisha for the tourism sector has distributed 660 crore in its budget for the present financial year. In these three cities, Jadav said that with the introduction of direct flights, they hope to see a rise in foreign tourists in Odisha.


In starting direct flights to Bhubaneswar to Dubai, they have shown a more proactive approach. It began on May 15 th , and Bangkok and Singapore on Jun 3 rd , he said.


To these three places, he said that connecting Bhubaneswar will not only enhance tourism but will strengthen trade relations as well, he said. Jadhav hopes a 10-15 per cent rise on an average in yearly tourist arrivals.
