On May Day,The never-ending influx of tourists pouring into the city of Venice is compelling the city’s government to take stringent measures this coming weekend for May Day and separate visitors from local residents. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro — who called the regulation an “experiment with a new tourism management system” — accepted the new law and order that will separate people during their longer vacations weekend from April 28 through May 1.

“(These are) urgent measures to ensure public safety, safety and livability in the historic city of Venice,” said a statement released by local authorities.

In few areas, only locals who have Venezia Unica card will be allowed to walk the streets, as visitors will not be permitted from popular areas like the Strada Nova, which leads to San Marco church.

Tourists will find themselves moving forward down side streets and detoured passageways toward the sites of the city in an approximate way.

Currently, Venice has only 50,000 people. But the canal town is hoping for more than 200,000 visitors this weekend, a number that’s not too far out of the kingdom of a typical weekend in the Italian city.

Venice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s beginning to experience a huge influx of guests, prompting a #EnjoyRespectVenezia campaign introduced by the city in a way to endorse sustainable tourism. But it hasn’t seemed to quell the tourism tide.
