Amaresh Tiwari, Honorary Secretary of India Convention Promotion Bureau, speaks to TTW at ITB Berlin 2008 on the upcoming world class convention centre in India, the rapidly blooming MICE market attracting foreign countries, emerging up-market luxury destinations and Madhya Pradesh, the Tiger Capital of India.
Travel and Tour World: What are your plans for 2018?
Amaresh Tiwari: India is among the fastest growing economies in the world and has bloomed very fast in terms of business and opportunity. So, the whole world is attracted to visit India as it is blooming fast as a MICE destination and both business and leisure are increasing.
So, lots of Europeans and Americans have started coming to India for MICE (Meetings, incentives, conference and events) and roadshows. They want to feel their presence and create their brand value in India.
The MICE market is also growing very fast and if you see the ICCA database, India has already ranked up in the last two to three years. We would be clearing the ladder very soon in the next 5 years, and India would emerge as one of the top MICE destinations in the world.
Travel and Tour World: What are the main markets in Europe?
Amaresh Tiwari: The main markets in Europe for MICE are Amsterdam, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Milan and London.
Travel and Tour World : Can you tell us some interesting things about your State?
Amaresh Tiwari: In terms of major market, when you are talking about Madhya Pradesh as a destination, it is known as the Tiger Capital of the world. The world’s largest tiger population is in Madhya Pradesh with more than 37% of state under the wildlife.
The Indian wildlife is not like the African wildlife having a lot of flora, fauna and species. Speaking about the wellness of Madhya Pradesh, we call it –‘Discover India to re-discover yourself’, fall in love with Madhya Pradesh as we have amazing wildlife and fascinating destination. We call Madhya Pradesh as the heart of Incredible India.
Madhya Pradesh has temples, the Khajuraho, the Sanchi where history is from 3rd century to 5th century BC. Even in a place in Bhopal called the Bhimbetka you will find rock paintings which are more than 35,000 years old from the monolothic period, so history is very rich in Madhya Pradesh. Cultural value in modern Madhya Pradesh is maintained through a fine combination of wildlife, culture and history.
Travel and Tour World : Talking about MICE, in terms of big numbers tell us about the convention centre facilities and five star properties in your state?
Amaresh Tiwari: If you go through the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) database more than 85% of the MICE events are less than 500 people so those who are talking about the big convention centre is a myth.
In India, we are building one of the world’s best convention centre which is opening in 2019 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, with the capacity of holding 7000 people under one convention hall.
In terms of Madhya Pradesh, Indore has 3 to 4 major convention centres which can take care of atleast 5000 to 6000 people at once. It is emerging as a MICE destination very fast along with Bhopal and other places in Madhya Pradesh.
Considering 5 star hotels and convention centres, we have major chains like the TAJ , Oberoi , IHG , Accor, Marriott, which have a presence here. Out of 10 luxury properties 7 are in India which proves that we have the best luxuries in the world, from luxury trains to hotels.
India is not a cheap destination as it is a very up-market and luxurious. It is not for short haul destination, where in Europe people are travelling for weekend trips, like Germans visiting France or France visiting Italy.
India is a long holiday destination where everyone stays for 14 to 21 days. Therefore, product is expensive, but we do not sell the package or the product but the experience. Hence, that is what makes a difference in India and we call it Incredible India.
