Outbound Chinese tourists spent $270bn

The cost of pandemic to the destinations universally have reached a joint number of $270 billion in terms of Chinese outbound tourist spending in 2020 and 2021 alone, said the UNWTO. As a result, the border re-opening represents the instant time the world has been waiting for two years, noted Zurab Pololikashvili, the UNWTO Secretary-General, heading a high-level team to the city of Hangzhou to take part in the formal re-opening ceremony.

From the time restrictions were raised, the UNWTO Secretary-General is the first UN Head of Agency to come to China. Hu Heping, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, China, welcomed the support of UNWTO all through the pandemic and for taking part in the celebrations of the official re-opening. The Minister Hu Heping and Secretary-General Pololikashvili, in a bilateral meeting, decided to intensify their collaboration even further by placing tourism on the agenda for foreign development assistance and in the prime areas related to education in tourism and tourism for rural development.


As per the data of UNWTO, in world, China grew to be the biggest tourism source market before pandemic hit countries. Chinese tourists, in 2019, spent a joint $255 billion on foreign travel, as domestic tourism acted as a main pillar for employment and development, with over 6 billion trips, helping jobs and businesses across the country.


Reflecting the work of UNWTO to make tourism a motivating force in terms of rural development, the high-level team was welcomed to Yucun.
