Passengers Warned of Bridge Improvements on Manchester Airport Line

Published on : Saturday, February 15, 2020

Network RailPassengers are being made aware of major bridge upgrade work over two weekends in March affecting trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport.

The £650,000 upgrade to the bridge which takes the railway over Slade Lane in Levenshulme, Manchesterwill see it strengthened and made more reliable as part of the Great North Rail Project.

During the work on Sunday 1st and Sunday 8th March 2020 there will be no trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport.

All trains normally bound for Manchester Airport will terminate at Manchester Piccadilly where passengers will transfer to rail replacement buses to complete their journeys.

People are advised to check and to allow extra time to get to and from the airport.

Kathryn Berry, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said: “While I understand the closure of the railway on 1st and 8th March is inconvenient for passengers, this essential work as part of the Great North Rail Project is needed to ensure the reliability of the railway bridge for decades to come.

“I’d urge anyone needing to travel on the Manchester Airport line on these two Sundays to allow more time for their journeys and check National Rail Enquiries to know exactly what to expect.”

Slade Lane, the road under the bridge, will be reduced to a single lane for road traffic. The footpath under the bridge will stay open.

Network Rail is holding a public information event from 4pm – 7pm at on Thursday 20th February at Levenshulme Inspire Centre for local people to learn more about the work and has also written to residents ahead of the railway upgrade.

The project team is working closely with Manchester City Council to ensure the work causes the least disruption possible to people living in the area.

Passengers who need to travel to and from Manchester Airport, Heald Green, East Didsbury, Gatley, and Mauldeth Road will be able to travel by replacement bus service.
