More than 25,000 people have signed a petition for saving Doncaster Sheffield Airport as the government might close it soon, according to official orders.

Directors said the business might no longer be commercially viable at all. In response to this, they have cited issues including Covid and the impact of repeated flight cancellation.

If this happens then 800 jobs will be at risk. A six-week consultation into its future is likely to begin. The meeting will be held soon to decide further on the matter.

The site is part of Peel Group which opened in 2005 as a commercial international airport. The airport handles more than a million passengers annually and flies to 50 destinations.

There are several hotels dependent on the airport. A 77-room Crown Hotel in Bawtry has more than a quarter of the rooms booked for the aircraft crew of Doncaster Sheffield Airport(DSA).

Craig Davie, from the hotel Crown, said that have had TUI crews stay here for the last 20 years, since they opened the airport they have been the favourite Hotel of many crews and stable customers.

Around this time of the year, they get between 15 and 25 rooms booked for either the passengers or the crew.
He continued that hearing an aeroplane going over the hotel is a common phenomenon. Thus, if the airport fails then there is a full possibility of their business being disrupted completely.

The small airports always run the risk of fund shortages as they work in “base carriers”. TUI is counted among the smallest airports on the globe. With a lower number of destinations to fly from, there are not many possibilities for an Airport like Doncaster to make a flight in next years, if immediate measures have not been taken.

Summer holidays to Lanzarote, Tenerife, Malaga and Palma have been cancelled. Thus, it is exceedingly difficult to survive. Simon Calder, the travel editor of Independent said that airports with more than 100 flights a day are secure, which is not the case for Doncaster.

The major reason behind that is not many Airlines function in small airports. Many are saying that instead of blaming the Covid period. It is necessary to question why Airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair have not flown out from Doncaster more frequently.

Local leaders are negotiating with the government for action. Shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh asked Transport Secretary Grant Shapps to take active action for saving this South Yorkshire’s international airport.
