Perth festivalThe Perth Festival is interested to attract more visitors from outside Western Australia as well as from nearby Asian countries, after its first survey highlighted that only 7 percent of attendees came from outside the city.

A total of 6568 visitors came from intrastate, interstate and overseas; while exploring Perth, they spent around $1.023 million alone on accommodation.

The survey was carried on by Perth-based arts research body Culture Counts to measure the impact of the festival on WA’s social, cultural and economic life. Over 4000 attendees, including artists and arts workers, teachers, students, sponsors, staff and volunteers were requested for their views; surveys done previously had been restricted to 800 interviewees.

Ninety eight percent of the respondents stated that the festival was important to the cultural life of the state and 94 percent said it delivered high-quality cultural experiences.

“We are thrilled with this confirmation that our city hosts one of the greatest curated arts festivals in the world, attracting tourists and the best international artists to Perth and fostering Western Australian talent and developing our capacity for innovation,” Perth Festival executive director Nathan Bennett says. “We are working with Tourism WA to increase outside visitation, particularly from places like Singapore and Malaysia, which are close and share the same time zone.”

He points out that overseas visitors should be enthused as well to view Perth’s annual festival which would become an opportunity to see local culture as well as identity reflected in shows like this year’s CBD music event Siren Song and the 2017 Boorna Waanginy audio-visual walking tour through Kings Park.
