Petra, also called the Rose City of Jordan, is back in tourism business with the numbers showing a promising upward curve. This has given a boost to the locals involved in tourism business.

Petra attracted 900,000 visitors last year, as per the records of Jordan tourism authorities. This is almost close to the record one million mark of 2019. Jordan as a whole received 4.6 million visitors in 2022. This is almost four times the number of 2020. Last year, the country earned $5.3 billion from tourism.

Petra is a United Nations World Heritage site and was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a 2007 online poll.

The Rose City is famous for its stunning temples hewn out of the rose-pink cliff faces. It was built in 312 BC as the capital of the ancient Arab kingdom of the Nabataeans, which fell to the Romans in 106 BC.
The ancient city remained unknown in the West until a Swiss traveller visited it in 1812.

Petra is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan’s most-visited tourist attraction. In 2011, following an 11-month project planning phase, the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority published a Strategic Master Plan that guides planned development of the Petra Region. This is intended to guide planned development of the Petra Region in an efficient, balanced and sustainable way over the next 20 years for the benefit of the local population and of Jordan in general.
