Port Douglas tourism introduces ‘Adopt a Worker’ campaign

Recently, an important campaign was introduced to help find beds for tourism workers has been introduced as the shortage of accommodation together with international tourists and their return disrupts the industry.

Port Douglas, long preferred by the presidents of the US along with celebrities has one of the lowest rental vacancy rates in Australia with just 0.4 per cent.

Tara Bennett, the Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree chief executive officer, explained that ‘Adopt a Worker’ project was requesting the community to place any space they may have to accommodate our workers in replace of cash.

Ms Bennett said that if there is any spare room, vacant land, empty flat or van, we’re urging all to adopt a worker.

From people, we are witnessing enthusiasm who are interested to come up and work, in winters, the destination is gorgeous but once they are here, they are facing shortage of accomodation.

Recently marked its 27th anniversary, Rhys Bawden’s Salsa Bar and Grill is located near the Port Douglas waterfront.

Plates signed by the famous Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson and other Hollywood stars decorate the walls, as singers like Ed Sheeran and Kylie Minogue have also come to this place for a meal.

He stated that the current housing shortage was affecting businesses in a bad manner.

Mr Bawden said that they have staff members who have lived and worked for more than 15 years in Port Douglas are currently losing their homes because of high rent that are being taken out of the rental list to turn them into holiday homes.
