During the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Winter Games earlier this month, over 900 athletes will witness Victoria’s first-rate athletic facilities firsthand. We expect there will be many more to follow.

For our city, it was a momentous weekend as well as for TAAF itself. In 2021, when Victoria made a successful bid to arrange the TAAF Winter Games through 2024, we became the first city outside of a metropolitan area to arrange an event of this type that attracts athletes from adjoining areas of Texas and neighbouring states.

We were able to grab this contract is not only an evidence to the partnership between the City of Victoria (Parks & Recreation and the Convention & Visitors Bureau) and Victoria ISD to design the winning bid package; it also points out the profit of our community’s continuing effort to invest in facilities that will make our city a preferred destination for sports tourism.

Victoria asserted its commitment to grow sports tourism during the development of our 2035 Comprehensive Plan. In economic development, tourism is a driving factor. Hundreds of athletes visited our community during the TAAF Winter Games, relished cuisines at our restaurants and spent time at our hotels. This not only attracts new funds to our community but contributes to economic diversity by supporting the hospitality sector.
