Some travel and insurance companies in Atlantic Canada state that there has been a rising interest in people wanting to purchase travel insurance.

Backlogged luggage became a common sight at Canadian airports which comes after weather and staff shortages that saw holiday travel disrupted across the country. Passengers have been grappling with long wait times and unexpected delays since covid – 19 travel restrictions were lifted less than a year ago.

Paulette Soloman, owner of the Travel Store in Charlottetown offered to say that the reports of travel woes have not been dampening people’s enthusiasm for travel, but they were taking more precautions.

Solomon noted that more people were asking about it and purchasing travel insurance. She added that travel was a really big investment for most of them, and they did not want people to be disappointed either in the lead-up to their trip or while they were on vacation.

However, Solomon exclaimed they had also seen Islanders finding ways to avoid common travel issues, such as by taking direct flights out of Halifax or Moncton to avoid connections or trying to bring carry-on luggage.

As proclaimed by her she invested in Air Tags tracking devices to keep tabs on her suitcase when she went on a Europe trip with several connecting flights.

A solution – driven by her – was that it might not prevent lost luggage, but if our bag gets delayed or lost along the way we could track where it is.

Steve Olmstead, Canadian Automobile Association Atlantics director of social responsibility and advocacy, stated that lost luggage has become a ‘pretty consistent story’ when it comes to traveling.

He volunteered to state that a lot of them have taken trips now where they had experienced arriving at a place and the luggage had not arrived with them. This level of uncertainty is one of the reasons travel insurance products have been in such high demand.

Olmstead also stated that although people usually feel that traveling locally was more predictable, the rising interest in travel insurance had extended to domestic travel as well.

He drew confidence stating that those products were very popular and that he would expect they would continue to be popular for some time.

In the meanwhile, returning to travel has not been easy for passengers on airlines, and Olmstead predicted he would expect that to turn around in the long – term.
Gabor Lukacs, president of Air Passengers Rights, said that while travel health insurance was important there were certain travel issues making insurance not to be the right option. He indicated that the Issues with lost or damaged luggage should always be brought to an airline first.

Similarly, he stated that in those situations by going through insurance we might also be forgoing the behavior modification effect that making the claims against the airlines would have.

He underlined the statement that passengers have rights against airlines whether they have purchased travel insurance or not, and he also thought it was important for passengers to understand that insurance covers only specific risks, while as passengers they had rights against airlines and that was a far broader notion.
