The Qantas passenger airline’s boss has asked many senior staff to volunteer for the shifts as there is a significant amount of staff shortage in the industry still.

This contract would work for three months. Qantas airlines have the capacity to build service quality only with the support from the staff at the senior level. Top executives were approached to volunteer for luggage control in Melbourne and Sydney. They have to balance the responsibility as they need to carry out several tasks. These include carrying luggage, loading luggage and unloading luggage at the same time.

Colin Hughes, Qantas’s chief operating officer has asked wanting at least 100 people from the senior staff management team. Since the restrictions for a pandemic have been uplifted, travel has increased a lot. However, the passenger handling staff has reduced hugely. The proper recruitment will require some more time to be spent.

The record of Qantas airlines has not been good. More than 1,600 luggage handlers lost their job during the pandemic. More than 8% of the flights have been cancelled in July. This has earned the airline the reputation of being one of the least reliable airlines in Australia.

Mr Hughes has written an email requesting the managers to work in a state like that. His mail said that since the Covid restrictions have been lifted and the winter flu which coupled with the ongoing staff shortage and financial trouble resource management has become particularly difficult.

He also further stated that there is no expectation imposed on them that they will continue in that position for a long time despite being in their respecting positions, but as the hour calls it is necessary that all of them participate.

Qantas spokesperson has stated that they were quite sure for some time that their operational performance was not meeting the expectation of the customers. Thus it is very much important to control the performance now and rebuild the reputation. He also informed that about 200 head office staff has come down from their position to help the Airline handle the chaos.
