Rains expected in California – Benevolence or Threat ?

Expected rain in California will help to stifle the Camp Fire that is raging for past 11 days.

The 4 to 6 inches of rainfall will help to douse the blazing fire that has already taken toll of 79 people. The heavily polluted air smothering over the Northern California will also improve.

The rains will seem benevolent but there is a catch. It can also prove a menace.

There is more than 151,000 acres of newly scorched earth, and thus no vegetation to soak up the rain. There is heightened risk of mudslides making things difficult for the firefighters.

They are fighting this fire in the mountainous areas — the ravines, the canyons, very steep, rugged terrain as per Scott McLean, deputy chief for Cal Fire, the state’s forestry and fire protection agency.

The dirt roads will turn into mud adding to the risk of debris flow gushing from the Camp Fire’s charred rubble as per the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office.

The Camp Fire broke out on November 8, and has destroyed more than 11,700 homes and torched an area the size of Chicago. The blaze will persist.

According to Cal Fire, the blaze might not be fully contained until November 30. Fire officials predict the Camp Fire is only halfway done burning.
