Today, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority will begin work to resurface runway 06L/24R, one of Toronto Pearson’s east/west runways, located in the southern area of the airport. In comparison to Spring 2017’s rehabilitation of the 05/23 runway, this work has been planned to be much less disruptive. This project consists of the milling and repaving of a portion of the runway surface, electrical maintenance, and runway safety upgrades, ensuring that the runway is maintained for safe operations.
Phase one of resurfacing is expected to be completed in June 2018. For the duration of phase one, all work is scheduled to take place between 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. Resurfacing has been planned during Toronto Pearson’s off-peak hours when flight traffic is lowest. Passengers may experience slightly longer than average aircraft taxi times between 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. if the closure of 06L/24R requires an alternate route to their assigned gate or runway.
For sections of the project, the north/south runways are likely to see use between 10 p.m.-12 a.m., as some of the work restricts access to the southernmost runway (i.e. 06R/24L). Several outreach tools have been used to ensure that the airport’s neighbors are aware of the potential for north/south operation caused by resurfacing.
The GTAA thank its partners, neighbours and passengers for their patience and cooperation as we work to maintain continued safe operations.
