A record high of 107 million tourists in 2017 was welcomed by China’s far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region which was 32.4 percent up year-on-year.
Shohrat Zakir, chairman of the Xinjiang regional government announced the number while delivering a government work report at the ongoing local parliamentary session.
In 2017, the tourists spent over 182 billion yuan (28.4 billion U.S. dollars) in Xinjiang which was 30 percent more than 2016.
Zakir said, Xinjiang’s tourism performance reveals that Xinjiang is a good place and tourism is a barometer of stability and harmony.
He further added that during the past year, improved social stability has provided conditions and guarantees for Xinjiang’s economic and social development that provided residents with a better sense of security.
Tourism is an important pillar industry with the greatest potential in Xinjiang, the report stated.
In 2018 the region should strive for at least 30 percent year-on-year growth in tourist numbers.
