Shohrat Zakir, chairman of the Xinjiang regional government announced the number while delivering a government work report at the ongoing local parliamentary session.

In 2017, the tourists spent over 182 billion yuan (28.4 billion U.S. dollars) in Xinjiang which was 30 percent more than  2016.

Zakir said, Xinjiang’s tourism performance reveals that  Xinjiang is a good place and tourism is a barometer of stability and harmony.

He further added that  during the past year, improved social stability has provided conditions and guarantees for Xinjiang’s economic and social development that provided residents  with a better sense of security.

Tourism is an important pillar industry with the greatest potential  in Xinjiang, the report stated.

In 2018 the region should strive for at least 30 percent year-on-year growth in tourist numbers.
