On December 20, 2024, the Romanian city of Reșița marked a significant milestone in its urban transport history as trams returned to service after a 13-year hiatus. This revival not only restores a crucial public transport option but also underscores the successful utilization of EU funding to modernize infrastructure and improve urban mobility.

The Journey to Revival

The Reșița tramway, originally inaugurated in 1988, ceased operations in August 2011 due to deteriorating infrastructure and rolling stock, which the city could no longer afford to maintain. The original line extended from RENK in the north to Stavila in the east, covering a comprehensive network. However, financial constraints and declining ridership led to its closure.

A turning point came in 2019 when city officials secured funding through the EU’s Regional Operational Programme 2014-20, enabling them to initiate rehabilitation efforts. Austria’s Porr was awarded a 268m lei contract in April 2022, covering extensive upgrades, including tracks, stops, depots, power systems, and pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. These investments reflect a broader commitment to sustainable and integrated urban transport solutions.

Modern Infrastructure and Operations

The revamped tram service now operates along a 9 km route connecting Kaufland in the north to Reșița-Montana in the southeast. While the outer sections of the original line remain closed, the renewed route provides efficient and reliable transport, with a journey time of 30 minutes end-to-end. Trams run every 8 minutes during peak hours, ensuring minimal wait times for passengers.

The infrastructure overhaul includes state-of-the-art tracks and energy-efficient power systems, enhancing operational reliability. The addition of pedestrian and cycling paths alongside the tram route promotes multimodal connectivity, aligning with modern urban mobility trends.

New Trams: A Technological Leap

To complement the upgraded infrastructure, Reșița procured 13 twin-section trams from Turkey’s Durmazlar under a 135·4m lei contract awarded in June 2020. These bidirectional trams are 18 meters long, 2,400 mm wide, and have a passenger capacity of 135, including 33 seated.

The new trams feature advanced safety and comfort measures, including low-floor access for enhanced accessibility, air conditioning, and energy-efficient systems. Their design reflects the latest advancements in public transport technology, making them a valuable asset for Reșița’s urban mobility landscape.

Economic and Social Impact

The return of tram services is expected to deliver significant economic and social benefits to Reșița. Improved connectivity supports local businesses, reduces traffic congestion, and encourages sustainable commuting habits. Moreover, the investment underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents while reducing its environmental footprint.

Conclusion

The revival of tram services in Reșița marks a transformative chapter in the city’s urban transport history. By leveraging EU funding and modern technology, Reșița has set a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility in Romania. As trams glide along their renewed tracks, they symbolize not just a return to a familiar mode of transport but a forward-looking vision for the city’s future.
