The tourists from Russia have improved October tourist arrivals of Sri Lanka rapidly, helping the country to get back by 41 percent to 42, 026 from the lowest September numbers to 29, 802 and exceeding the 550, 000 mark in the initial ten months, a newspaper on Wednesday reported.

The improvement in the number of arrival happened majorly because of the resumption of Aeroflot, the Russian flag carrier, along with successful road shows in series which were carried out in India in October, the Daily FT reports.

Also, in October, Russia came up as the second biggest source market after India and downgraded the UK to number three.

In the initial 10 months, arrivals amounted 568, 258, a welcome development for the triple-hit tourism, however, tourism still losing by 73 percent compared to the same time pre-covid 2018.

To Sri Lanka, India topped the tourist traffic in October with 8862, showing a 21 percent of total arrival.

Russia was next with 6189 tourists, followed by the UK with 4275, Germany with 2881 and Australia 2016, as confirmed by the newspaper.

Maldives, France, Canada, US and Switzerland also received tourists, as mentioned by the data published by SLTDA.
