Discussions about the resumption of direct flights between the United States and Russia are heating up, as Russian official Kirill Dmitriev, a sanctioned individual, visited Washington, D.C., and met with senior members of the Trump administration. The CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Dmitriev’s meeting with U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, explored the potential for restoring air travel between the two nations.

The talks, included a focus on the broader economic ties between Russia and the United States. Dmitriev expressed that U.S. businesses have shown “a great desire” to return to Russia, noting that both nations are actively working on the resumption of direct flights to the U.S. This comes after a period of limited connectivity, with Russian citizens previously forced to fly via third-party destinations such as Istanbul or Dubai to reach the U.S.

In addition to the recent talks, earlier discussions in February also highlighted the importance of restoring direct air links. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement following a meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, underscoring the necessity of improving diplomatic and economic relations. They specifically encouraged the U.S. to consider the restoration of direct air services, a move that could significantly ease travel between the countries, especially for business and tourism purposes.

The suspension of direct flights occurred after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, when many Western countries, including the U.S. and European Union, imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia. This included halting direct flights to and from Russia and prohibiting third-country operators from conducting domestic flights within Russia. As part of this, the European Commission extended the flight ban in February 2024, blocking airlines supplying aviation goods to Russian carriers.

Despite this, a number of international airlines continue to operate one-stop flights between Russia and the U.S. These airlines include major carriers such as Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air China, and EgyptAir. According to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium, these airlines collectively offer 480 weekly connections to the U.S. from Russia in April 2025, with Turkish Airlines leading the pack, providing 106 weekly departures. Other airlines such as Qatar Airways and Emirates also contribute with significant flight schedules, facilitating one-stop connections from Russia to major U.S. airports.

As the geopolitical climate continues to evolve, both Russian officials and U.S. diplomats have reiterated the importance of fostering stronger ties. While the U.S. continues to impose sanctions, efforts to reconnect through direct flights could pave the way for greater engagement between the two countries. The restoration of air links could also offer significant benefits for both economies, allowing businesses to reintegrate into Russian markets while enhancing cultural exchanges and tourism between the nations.

Given the strategic importance of air connectivity, resuming direct flights between Russia and the U.S. would be a monumental step in the re-establishment of diplomatic and economic relations. While challenges remain, these conversations mark an important shift in the dialogue between the two nations.
