The South African Department of Tourism held discussions with the SA Police Service (SAPS) regarding the likelihood of setting up a Police Tourism Safety Unit focusing on the protection of tourists who would visit South Africa.

Fish Mahlalela, the Deputy Minister of Tourism said on the sidelines of ITB Berlin, which is one of the prominent tourism trade events in the world that SAPS is thinking about the viability of creating such an entity.

Mahlalela added that SA is encountering challenges, specifically concerning safety and refuge. This demoralizes the country’s efforts toward tourism marketing. Due to that, the SA government has initiated procedures to ascertain that they give rise to a safe background for all visiting tourists. An example of this is young folks being instructed as tourism safety observers and positioned at diverse tourism attractions.
