SABS publishes a new nationwide standard for hotels and lodging

Recently, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) with the help of its Technical Committee, SABS TC 228 published a new nationwide standard SANS: 18513that sets out the terminology for hotels and other categories of tourism accommodation.


The SABS said that when embarking on a vacation and while reserving your housing, does oneknow the difference between a homestay, couch sharing,holiday home, a holiday cottage, apartment hotel, glamping,camping and the horde of other typesthat are common for tourist accommodations?


As per the Department of Tourism, tourism adds 3.7% to the gross domestic product ofSouth Africa, and provides work for more than one million people and is a segment that is developing. In 2019, before the onset of the pandemic, the global tourism segment was valued at $8.9 trillion.


It also said that SANS 18513 had been implemented from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and delivers the descriptions to create a common thought regarding the various lodging types and amenities.


The SABS said that the countrywide standard comprises explanations for half board, early check-in, mini-bar service, accessible rooms, suites, junior suites, air conditioning and gyms along with a variety of other normally found facilities that relates to the tourism sector.
