A sequence of disused railway arches in Salford is poised for a transformation into a dynamic new venue featuring food and drink outlets, an art gallery, and a microbrewery, following plans submitted to the local council by PL North Bridge. This initiative aims to cultivate an “exciting” and “unique” destination within the Greengate area, enhancing its appeal to residents and visitors alike.

This redevelopment proposal is part of a broader vision by the same developer, which includes the construction of a towering 41-storey apartment block adjacent to the arches. This new structure is designed to introduce 568 co-living units into the neighborhood, signifying a substantial boost to local housing options. The renovation project will encompass eight arches under the railway leading to Manchester Victoria station, with connections to the historic Grade II listed Stephenson Bridge.

The application suggests that the rejuvenated arches will host a variety of businesses, from market stalls and bars to craft workshops, shops, and restaurants, adding a vibrant commercial and cultural hub to the area. Additionally, provisions for waste and cycle storage to support the adjacent co-living development are included in the plans.

Currently described as being in “poor condition” with mismatched entrances that detract from the area’s character, the proposed revamp aims to rectify these issues. The inclusion of an innovative “lighting concept” within the design intends to guide visitors through the space, creating a welcoming and engaging environment.

The developer envisions this project as a magnet for visitors from across Greater Manchester, drawn by the unique atmosphere and diverse culinary and cultural offerings. This ambition aligns with ongoing efforts by the council to transform Greengate into a desirable urban quarter, reminiscent of Brooklyn’s vibrant streetscapes, attracting people from all over the region and beyond.

Greengate’s strategic location, bridging the historic core of Salford and Manchester city center, underscores its potential as a key player in the regional tourism landscape. The integration of this project with a significant co-living development signals a transformative period for the area. However, the realization of this vision and the opening of these new spaces may span up to two years, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the Greengate neighborhood.
