On January 31st, 2024, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority hosted its FAA-mandated triennial mass casualty exercise Airex 2024 to examine a fake accident of an aircraft at San Diego International Airport.

From San Diego International Airport, a press release was published and coordinated by the emergency management team of the airport authority, the training situation rotated around an imaginary airline plane crashing incident that spurt into fires with 85 passengers on board. Over 200 employees of the Airport Authority, mutual aid partners, first responders, and stakeholders took part in the two-hour exercise. This started at 9:00 a.m

Participants comprised, the San Diego Port Police, San Diego Fire Department, the Transportation Security Administration, Falck Ambulance Services, Jet Blue Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower and the American Red Cross, as per the release County Public Health, the Airport Authority and local hospitals. Also, airport authority employees were keen on playing a role for passengers, members of the media and family.

Susie Preiser, Manager of Emergency Management said in the release that the whole thing went efficiently and they learned a lot. These practice scenarios are extremely valuable.
