On Monday, the City of San Diego announced that it has decided to reopen some of its parks starting Tuesday. The beaches and piers have, however, been asked to remain closed for now. San Diego beaches and parks have been shut weeks before due to the travel restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.
San Diego citizens are known for their outdoor activities. Almost all recreational places and local tourist attractions remain full of visitors throughout the year. Residents are often found either enjoying the sun walking through Balboa Park, hiking in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, taking a stroll around Ocean Beach or engaged in water activities like found snorkeling in La Jolla Cove, surfing in Pacific Beach and paddleboarding in Mission Bay.
The reopening of a few parks comes with a series of limitations required to maintain social distancing measures. People are restricted from mass gathering as well as driving to the park. Parking lots have been asked to remain closed.
City Mayor Kevin Faulconer took to social media and shared that neighborhood and community parks, mini and pockets parks, as well as open spaces parks, will remain open. However, regional parks, museums, boardwalks, beaches, and preserve trails would continue to remain shut. In addition, all playgrounds, pools, recreation centers, basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields will also stay closed.
San Diegans are allowed to walk, jog, exercise and engage in individual passive activities. No active sports activities, organised or group activities and any form of a gathering are allowed. Citizens are also restricted to access fog off-leash areas, skate parks, and school district joint-use areas.
Re-opening parks to those who can access them without driving is a compromise. This move also unfairly favors residents who can afford to live near parks. Regardless, after month-long complete stay-at-home orders, open parks will provide much-needed stress relief to those who have been stuck at home.
