A passenger was arrested following a racist rant onboard a United Airlines flight bound for San Francisco. The New Year’s Day flight originated in Sydney however was forced to divert to Auckland after a passenger failed to listen to crew on board.
As per the other passengers, the accused man was using verbally abusive words, better described as racist rant, when two other passengers described as being of Indian or Pakistani descent, seated on either side, talked over him.
A video has been shared on the social media which snaps the man shouting at the air attendant who is seen trying to calm him down. He was heard saying that it would be “cool” if the flight was turned around.
One passenger seated three to four rows in front of him said the situation escalated from there with the man, a Caucasian, turning on the attendants who tried to intervene. The man continued his rant from verbally abusing Indians to Asians to Muslims to non-whites. He also yelled at the flight crew members. The man then proceeded to launch into “offensive language, racial and sexist slurs”, began to grab soda off the cart, and demanded beer.
According to a police spokeswoman, this 42-year-old foreign national onboard flight UH870 was extremely ill behaved and was arrested on arrival before being referred to immigration. On the reason of diversion, it said that the passenger failed to follow crew instructions.
All 252 passengers were put up in hotels overnight. The airline apologised to all those onboard for the inconvenience.
