Uber and Tourism and Events Queensland joined forces to create a rideshare submarine, scUBer, to the Great Barrier Reef. It is available at Queensland, Australia for a limited time only, from May 27 – June 18, 2019. It can be booked from Heron Island or from Gladstone. The submarine experience takes users under water to experience the beauty of the reef while learning more about the huge ecosystem.
The battery-powered submarine travels to depths of about 20 m, offering the kind of experience usually limited to experienced divers.
In the south of the reef, scUBer voyages – a two-person submarine – will be at Heron Island from May 27, at a mere cost of U.S. dollars 3000 for two passengers or U.S. dollars 1500 for one. After the first two weeks, scUber will move north to Port Douglas, until June 18.
The reef surrounding the cay is full of wildlife, its pristine waters clear and warm in the shallows. Sharks and mantas and countless rays are spotted daily by snorkellers and divers, who can listen to whale song while watching turtles glide calmly by.
As per Leanne Coddington, Tourism and Events Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer, revealed that in late 2018, consumer research identified that exploring the Great Barrier Reef in a submarine was the most desired future travel experience sought by visitors.
