16 people including children were trapped in five cars, when the SeaWorld ride stopped suddenly. SeaWorld engineers were unable to get the gondola restarted. As per various reports, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department was called to the Bayside Skyride, a gondola ride at SeaWorld San Diego that crosses over Mission Bay at 7:20 p.m. It took two hours before the first two guests had reached the ground. The gondola stopped because of tripped circuit breaker. It took five hours to be rescued.

During the resuce, the guests were lowered into the boats. The rescuers were ‘basically repelling across the wires’ to return those trapped to safety. Crews used a rope system to lower guests one-by-one into boats on Mission Bay. A special harness was needed to lower the infant down. The process was slow and methodical as a fall could be catastrophic.

A SeaWorld statement said: “Guest safety is our top priority. Once our guests are cared for, we will conduct a thorough inspection of the ride prior to re-opening.” The statement mentioned, “We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused the guests.”

Half of the guests had been rescued by 10 pm. Just before 11 pm, all of the guests had been rescued and taken to a nearby dock.

No injuries were reported and all guests were reported to be safe once returned to land.
