Severe storms sweep across popular holiday destinations in Spain and Portugal

While the UK has enjoyed mainly dry and settled weather over the Easter break, it has been a very different story in some of the most popular holiday spots abroad.

Severe storms have been sweeping across parts of Spain and Portugal.

And the bad news for holidaymakers is that forecasters are warning of another bout of storms on Friday and Saturday.

A renowned forecasting service says that many countries across central and southern Europe are seeing unusually “late snowfall, heavy rain, strong winds and temperatures well below average.

But it adds that it’s a different story across the UK and Scandinavia where high pressure is dominating. Read how the Met Office is forecasting very little rain until the end of April.

Over the Easter weekend, there was even a weather warning for tourist hotspots, including Mallorca, Benidorm and Ibiza, and this weekend is not much better.

Holidaymakers across Iberia into central Mediterranean will be pretty disappointed with the weather that has been seen of late with areas of low pressure being sweeping in off the Atlantic through the Mediterranean.

It is all down to a big blocking area of high pressure, which will be sitting to the north of the UK bringing, drying settled and sunny but quite windy weather to Scandinavia, Denmark and to the UK.

But low pressure sweeping through the Mediterranean will continue to bring unsettled weather here with below par temperatures for the time of year.

He added that the area of low pressure will be gradually fizzling out as it pushes in towards the Balkans.

But it’s the next area of low pressure affecting Iberia which is likely to cause some issues as we move through Friday into the start of the weekend.

Once again, it is going to bring some cold air with it. There will be significant snow falling over the high ground not just across the Pyrenees, even across the high ground of central Spain and we’ve seen some very heavy late season snowfall with this area of low pressure across central Spain, so more snow that’s pretty unusual for this time of year for the heavy rain which will spread into central and southern France as well.

The wet weather continues into Saturday across the southwest quarter of Europe and then as we move through the weekend into next week looks like things will settle down, but there is still more rain on the way for parts of Spain and Portugal, even the middle part of next week.
