Under Project SWASTIK, Indian army installed is the ministry of defense’s Border Roads Organisation has recently taken on the responsibility of developing quality and security of Sikkim’s 74KM Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg.
The JNM is the main road that is significant to all armed forces posted in East Sikkim at the length of the China border. Also, this road is utilized for tourism purposes around Harbhajan Baba Mandir, Nathula Pass, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and for trade purposes with China.
In May 1964, after the formation of BRO, JNM was granted to BRO from CPWD. Because of its strategic and socio-economic significance, lately, BRO has been working persistently to improve it from C1-5 to Cl-9, and then to NHDL requirement.
In order to keep away from avalanches, this road stretch has been revamped to align away from susceptible spots once again. This road’s riding surface which had got worse with time due to heavy rainfall has been fixed as well by the Project SWASTIK’s brave soldiers.
As per the army sources, for the JNM, future plans comprise curve development, setting up of a variety of road security rules and steps, cautionary road marking, setting up of vibrant and eye-catching caution
boards and resurfacing work.
The responsibility of road improvement was divided into two phases. The fully done tasks for Phase-I & 2 comprised improving the road stretch between Tashi view point and Mandakini waterfall.
